Also, I think there has to be a demographic trend in type of people (type by job) who took advantage of VDIS. In my opinions these were not big guys. VDIS did not work in case of big guys, so I don't think something similar will work now.
The people who didnt care about tarnishing their image by accepting that they had black money preferred VDIS. However, politicians and big industrialist have lot more at stake than just money. I am skeptical.Chinmayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03271689505913144197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128681917704615266.post-31976526663147067172011-02-02T11:16:47.900-08:002011-02-02T11:16:47.900-08:00What about honest tax payers? I too saw the program on DD aired in CNN-IBN ...Hi,

I too saw the program on DD aired in CNN-IBN and it brought back some nice memories. However, I have a different take on the current crop of channels and programs.

Nowadays, hundreds of channels competing for your eyeballs, hence it becomes very difficult for the viewer to sift the wheat from the chaff. There are definitely some very good educative and interesting programs, but they are now targeted at the niche audience. Blame should be equally apportioned to the population at large and the channels for degeneration of the quality, as it is us who jack up the TRP for the reality shows and other mundane stuff.

Going back to old DD days, we didn't have the choice and so we were forced to consume whatever was aired.

I don't think DD has to change its avatar to fight with these channels, even today, I feel there are some good programs being aired in DD. Form (in terms of production value) is average, but the content is good.

regards
Krishna.
Chennai.tifosikrishnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05562630480259094804noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128681917704615266.post-62259703539041318962009-10-02T04:43:25.796-07:002009-10-02T04:43:25.796-07:00The private channels were able to glamourise news ...The private channels were able to glamourise news in a way which a public channel like DD cannot do.

But, there is no reason why we cant give them sufficient autonomy and control over news, like public channels in U.K.PShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03367215803724375329noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128681917704615266.post-16284712570825433252009-10-02T00:07:09.722-07:002009-10-02T00:07:09.722-07:00nicely written. couldn't agree less on what yo...nicely written. couldn't agree less on what you said.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06912863787377630858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128681917704615266.post-75956579101629450882009-09-20T05:25:37.556-07:002009-09-20T05:25:37.556-07:00350 crores could modernise the entire police force...350 crores could modernise the entire police force of Maharashtra! and with 2500 crore the whole of India!PShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03367215803724375329noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128681917704615266.post-46640053258208892152009-09-19T05:05:02.260-07:002009-09-19T05:05:02.260-07:00Yes I agree to a certain extent. TRP's are always a prime concern irrespective of the news, but to some extent this over hyping does benefit certain sections of society. I will exemplify this wid the Prince's case - The kiddo who had fallen in a man made hole and media hyperbolized the issue. There are two points that I'd like to make here:
1. Ironically, Nitish Kumar has been invited by London School of Economics to present his views on the turn-around of Bihar that has been brought by him.
2. The media in India never highlights the achievements or accomplishments of India. I still remember that the news of India launching Chandrayan was posted on the third page of HT whereas the accident news or small but destructive news are posted on the front pages. Media should censor itself if it wants to sustain its credibility.ArUn ShArMahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10486166351251328648noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128681917704615266.post-84593939380736414322009-08-26T01:48:13.375-07:002009-08-26T01:48:13.375-07:00Srini, nice post indeed, but there are some points...Srini, nice post indeed, but there are some points that I don't really believe are true. The first thing is that in as diverse country as ours, we cannot expect government to provide every facility to everybody. That'll be socialism or communism and not Democracy. I agree that the regulations should be in place and execution should be proper, but private sector and individuals also have their role to play for which government can provide subsidies, grants or funds.
Second, swine flu is a panicky situation because it kills in matter of days. The issue that should be addressed in this situation is the supply of masks and prevention of over-pricing of these masks and other preventive equipment. Proper information and threats need to be cascaded to even the lowest levels.
And thirdly, population is ACTUALLY a problem for the country and we are not faking it. India is growing at the highest pace in the world and we will overtake China in a few years. We do need to address it ASAP.ArUn ShArMahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10486166351251328648noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128681917704615266.post-10227937162320384952009-08-26T01:33:10.753-07:002009-08-26T01:33:10.753-07:00Hi Srinivasan, it's indeed a nice observation ...Hi Srinivasan, it's indeed a nice observation made by you. We have really seen a major shift in the governance style since last 5 years when Manmohan Singh was appointed the Prime Minister by COngress. But one imposing reason for this "Maturity" might be the immense pressure due to COmmonwealth Games. Delhi is not at all ready for the games to be held next year and Delhi govt. is not in a position to let Sreedharan go. Not to diminish the role of Mr. Sreedharan in the DMRC project, but he has maintained himself as the only person at the top who knows about everything. He doesn't have a succession plan ready and neither has the government cared about it, which it should ASAP.ArUn ShArMahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10486166351251328648noreply@blogger.com
